Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Children

Dr. Krichmar has worked with children and adolescents in different settings, such as in private practice, school, outpatient clinic, and at home. Dr. Krichmar’s particular area of expertise is risk assessment, short-term crisis intervention and therapy. She has extensive experience working with a high-risk population and is well versed in risk assessment and crisis intervention. Some of the issues with which her young clients have struggled are:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • self-esteem
  • social skills
  • emotional dysregulation
  • bullying
  • frustration tolerance
  • suicidality
  • friendships
  • transitions

Just like with adults, Dr. Krichmar utilizes a Cognitive Behavioral and a Dialectical Behavioral approach (CBT/DBT) to help her young clients understand how their thoughts, feelings and behavior are interconnected and how changing their thoughts can reduce the intensity of their feelings. Dr. Krichmar teaches children how to identify their negative self-talk and replace it with more adaptive one. Young clients learn how to recognize behaviors that increase positive emotions. They also learn how to recognize those behaviors that maintain negative emotions. Through role play, they learn how to cope with stressful situations differently, how to assert themselves in various situations and gain realistic strategies to improve their lives in school, home and with friends. Dr. Krichmar helps her younger clients learn and practice social skills, deficit of which may have been amplified by the pandemic.
